PrepVet Online Course Module

Jointly offered by TANUVAS & World Animal Protection (WAP)

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) in collaboration with World Animal Protection (WAP), New Delhi is offering an online course called “PrepVet or Veterinary Preparation” for Veterinarians and individuals who are interested to learn ways in managing animals during different stages of disasters. The course developed by WAP covers all topics of the Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU)’s Veterinary Emergency Response Operations block course imparted to train veterinary students, government officials and disaster management practitioners.This online course has a self-enrolment option and it is self-paced for individuals to take the course at their convenient time and can continue anytime from where they have left. The course is offered in English.

Course Objective: Risk management and reduction, including understanding the factors that lead to emergencies and being prepared for them, to minimize animal losses.

Course Topics: The online PrepVet course on our Moodle Platform is divided into three core topics.

1. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Management;

2. Climate Change Adaptation; and

3.Basic care of animals during emergencies.

Course Contents: 

1. Disaster Risk Management: Basic concepts and terminology;

2. Disaster Risk Reduction analysis and plans;

3. Companion animals;

4. Climate Change Adaptation;

5. Safety in emergencies;

6. Incident Command System;

7. Triage;

8. Animal evacuation process;

9. Standards and guidelines for livestock interventions in emergencies: Introduction to ‘LEGS’;

10. Role of the Vet; and

11.Animal Welfare.

Course Certificate: The individuals will obtain a digital certificate signed by Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai and World Animal Protection (WAP) once all the course contents are completed.
