Specialized Training

A specialized Training programme on “Animal Disaster Management Techniques” for the Extension faculty of TANUVAS is being organized by Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU), Madras Veterinary College, Chennai, from 09.2016 to 28.09.2016 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai. 30 participants representing various outreach centres of TANUVAS are participating in the three day programme. 

Dr.S.Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai inaugurated the training programme and addressed the participants. Dr.Naritsorn Pholperm, Disaster Management – Veterinary Manager, World Animal Protection, Thailand, Bangkok delivered the thematic address on Veterinary Emergency response in Disaster – A Global scenario.

A Training of Trainers (ToT) programme for faculty of TANUVAS on “Animal Disaster Management” from 04.02.2020 to 06.02.2020 was organised by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai of TANUVAS in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency (TNDRRA), World Animal Protection, New Delhi at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai.

Symposium

Conducted Flood Reponse Operations (Special Veterinary Camps) in the Flood affected areas of Thiruvallur District with the support and participation of Under graduate students, teaching and clinical faculty of Madras Veterinary college from 15.12.2015 to 17.12.2015. A total of 10417 animals were treated for various ailments and deworming and vaccination was carried out during the special camp.

National Symposium on “Veterinary Emergency Response during Disaster

A One day National Symposium on “Veterinary Emergency Response during Disaster” was organised by Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi and World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), New Delhi on 12.08.2013 at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension and Entrepreneurship, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai. Dr.R.Prabakaran, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai presided over the inaugural function and delivered his presidential address. Shri K.M.Singh, IPS (Retd.), Honorable Member, National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, New Delhi, released the symposium compendium and delivered the inaugural address. Dr.A.K.Sinha, Senior Research Officer, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi, highlighted about the symposium. Director, World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) proposed the vote of thanks.

A total of 121 participants including research scientist, teaching faculty and post graduate students participated in this symposium. Two technical sessions on the following themes viz., Animal Disaster Management Issues and Imperatives, Emergency Response during Animal Disaster and one group discussion on establishment of Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU) was conducted during this symposium.

  • A High level consultation meeting was organized for VERU Units of India and NDMA, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and WAP (WSPA) on 09.11.2013 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai
  • The first National Level Training of Trainers (ToT) on “Management of Animals in Emergencies” to National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel was conducted from 09.12.2013 to 21.12.2013.
  • A National level Training of Trainers (ToT) Course on “Management of Animals in Emergencies” for National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel was conducted jointly by Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU), Madras Veterinary College, TANUVAS, Chennai, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), New Delhi, Policy Perspective Foundation (PPF), and World Animal Protection (WAP), New Delhi from 09.05.2016 to 14.05.2016 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai.

Thirty six participants from 12 battalions of various parts of India participated in the six day programme. Shri K.M. Singh, IPS (Retd.), Former member of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Vice-President of Policy Perspectives Foundation, New Delhi participated in the inaugural programme on 09.05.2016 and delivered the inaugural address.

An International symposium on Animals in Disaster was jointly organized by Veterinary Emergency Response Unit, South zone and Department of veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in association with Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk reduction Agency (TNDRRA) and World Animal Protection (WAP) on 26th and 27th September 2018 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai. The honorable minister for State Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Tamilnadu, Thiru. Udumalai Radhakrishnan headed the inaugural function and released the compendium of the symposium, a book on animal disaster management, four Animal Disaster models and six puppet short films on scientific management of animals at the event. Dr. Satya Gopal I.A.S, Additional Chief Secretary / Commissioner of Revenue Administration and State Relief Commissioner delivered key note address and Dr. K. Gopal, I.A.S Principal Secretary to Government for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Department delivered special address in the inaugural function.

 Dr. C. Balachandran, Vice Chancellor, TANUVAS presided over the inaugural function and delivered presidential address. Shri K.M. Singh, IPS (Retd) and Former Member, National Disaster Management Authority and Vice President, Policy Perspectives Foundation, Mr. Pasqudim Santori, President Veterinary and Agri Foods, Bioethics Committee, Italy,Shri. Gajender Sharma, Country Director, World Animal Protection, Dr.J. John Kirubaharan, Dean, Madras Veterinary College, Dr.P.Mathialagan, Professor and Head, delegates, faculty of TANUVAS, Students, Press and Media participated in the symposium. Nearly 350 delegates from abroad and India participated in the symposium. NDRF, Arakkonam division organized an exhibition on different disaster rescue devices at Madras veterinary college as a part of this symposium.
